Welcome words from Sakina Jafarli

Greetings, art aficionados!

My name is Sakina Jafarli. I live in Baku. As a child I was inspired by works of a notable Azerbaijani artist Togrul Narimanbekov. Togrul Narimanbekov’s fascinating world of fine art fueled my passion for painting and shaped me as a curious artist.

My most favourite artworks of all times by Narimanbekov were the portrayal of yet another prominent Azerbaijani painter Sattar Bahlulzadeh along with other masterpieces, including Maiden Tower, the iconic portrait of Togrul’s nanny that he famously introduced to the world under the title Mother, as well as his legendary Pomegranates and Pears, to name a few.

His style, his use of the chaotic in the color combination reminds me of my own self, my character, my personality. The vibrance of his paintings are sublime and incredible beyond expression.

If poetry and music are both ethereal and unperceivable, art, on the contrary, is something very real. Especially in landscape painting. Painting is a silent art. Art is life itself.

On this website, I want to introduce you to my world of paintings. Each one of the artworks presented here is a tiny bit of my life; it is the representation of my love and my sentiment. I could write about it for hours, yet literature is not my genre. Therefore, let’s move from words to action. Make yourself comfortable and let’s get started!

Occupyinng the shores of the Caspian Sea, the dramatic Absheron peninsula is home to magnificent Baku, with its surrounding suburban settlements used traditionally as a perfect weekend getaway where people seek a refuge from the haste of a busy city life. This painting is Sakina’s reflection on the importance of solitude and occasional escape to the countryside. The flowering shrubs and bushes in the front of the picture emphasise the feeling of joy and relaxation as a Sunday afternoon spills its late summer treasures and thrills. In the back, the house is inviting those on journey inside, promising a tranquil ambiance and unforgettable home away from home experience under the blue skies.
Sakina’s painting narrates about a calm and still weather, which is clearly a rarity in Baku – the place that has rightfully earned the title of the city of winds. Along the dusty roads of Baku suburbs, Sakina seeks to uncover the hidden, to discover and explore the unfiltered beauty of the Absheron nature calling us to look no further. The beauty is in simplicity. Happiness is right where we are, if only we can stop and gaze at the scene that surrounds us.
But the clouds are coming to Baku - the versatility of Baku weather is like mood swings one can never predict ahead of time. It reminds us of the transition between day and night, the sun and the moon, leaving the bittersweet feeling of the end as the sunny day on a casual weekend will steadily turn into a rainy Monday.

One of the author’s early works with watercolour, this painting is very dear to Sakina’s heart. It is the reflection of the fullness of life, soothing freshness and passion for cherishing warmth of radiant vibes of autumn. Delicious, juicy and flavourful harvest fruit, a pear, in Sakina’s interpretation, symbolises the peace of mind, harmony and comfort of everyday life, as it does a continuous growth and longevity.

While creating with watercolours, Sakina iterates, every movement counts. It requires high concentration, precision and accuracy as you draw. Painting with watercolour is a very tedious job that leaves no room for the slightest discrepancy.

The four seasons of a year is a central theme surrounding Sakina’s art view. Powered by gentle touch of the spring bloom, the artist illustrates an elegant woman as the allegory of spring – the time of hope and rejuvenation. In the background, bunches of grapes that simbolise harvest and prosperity are hanging on the vines over the woman’s head turned back, with her gaze fixed into the distance searching for answers to her many unanswered questions in the comfort of her garden.

Fine lace and flounces on her headscarf tenderly cover the airiness of her flowing hair without diminishing its radiant beauty, but only emphasising it. Her kind eyes tell the viewers that she is in anticipation of the beautiful and the charmingly new.

The garden itself is filled with the breathtaking scents and flavours of spring. Featured in a magnificent summer dress with openwork lace embroidery, the lady in the garden is dressed in a national outfit. The theme of Azerbaijan is key to Sakina’s artworks. She uses elements of buta as an ornament characteristic of the authentic Azerbaijani decorative art.

The inspiration for this next painting in a series of artworks, where a central theme and the leading philosophy behind the imagery is the world of a woman, came from Sakina’s mother. Born and raised in Central Asia, Sakina has inherited from her mother the feminine strength and perseverance coupled with a keen sense of beauty rooted in her family. The woman in this artwork is featured wearing a traditional Uzbek outfit with a vast array of colour palettes and patterns of floral design on it. The image of the fabric evokes the artist’s childhood memories of her home in Uzbekistan and her mom busy with her chores as she moves around the house looking stunning in her floral dress.

Typically, an Uzbek woman’s clothing is made of bright fabric coloured in shades of red, green, blue, purple, orange and yellow – the colours of autumn chosen as the overarching theme of this illustration. Sakina’s main emphasis in this picture is on the woman’s hands, in line with the artist’s conviction that they convey a lot of hidden details about human personality that people oftentimes neglect to notice. With the fashionable cigarette holder hanging casually between her long and delicate fingers and with a stern impression in her eyes, the woman reveals serene confidence and noble grace while embodying the spirit of motherly fortitude and resistance. A strong woman of deeds and not words, she is the representation of a feminine power in the face of the world where we live in – the world that has a predominantly masculine profile. “As women, we are not as weak as many would think of women and certainly not weaker than men”, Sakina says as she iterates further, “We are equal, we take responsibilities, we make the world stronger and better”.

Yet another piece of artwork from a series of early paintings with watercolours, the bunches of pear fruit continue the autumn orchard framework, which Sakina drew upon in her previous works. The theme of still life in this illustration conveys a sense of earthly abundance and eternal beauty.

Inspired by Alexander McQueen’s 2014 spring collection – the “Art of War”, Sakina Jafarli created her own series of battle-field female archetype. Woman of today, in Sakina’s suggestion, is blatantly confident, fearlessly daring, fighting her limits and fiercely marches forward. There, she knows, a better life awaits her. There – where the sun is shining, the future is inviting.

The famous Ferris Wheel, also called Baku Eye, in the background emphasizes the flow of life despite all the turbulences and chaos of our everyday life. An image of a woman-warrior amidst the city’s most crowded and dense areas is the connotation to her unmatched inner power that makes a strong woman of the contemporary Orient to run against obstacles, to run with dignity, to break off the chains… To run to win. To run to succeed in the outer world.

It is difficult to choose a goal, and to get it is a matter of time and the firmness of the inner core, but what a pleasure it is - to pick up something that others are even afraid to think about, build your own path, walk along it with a proud gait, be saturated with exceptional thoughts and make all decisions in silence, to hear other people's cries, but listen only to your own whisper. direct all attention to personal secrets, secrets, stories. be fatal
